Medical Second Opinion

Get a second opinion from our specialists before you decide on the dental treatment you have been offered.

Talk to one more specialist before you decide

If the treatment you have been offered is extensive, will take a long time or includes a step that cannot be undone, such as an extraction, getting a second opinion is completely normal. The goal is not to question your current plan but to help you decide with more confidence and information.

At Biruni University Dental Hospital, specialists from the relevant department review your diagnosis, your X-ray and CT images and the treatment plan you were given. They then explain your options, with their expected results and limits, in plain language.

  • Your diagnosis and plan are reviewed by specialists in the relevant department
  • Your X-ray and CT images are part of the review
  • We explain the options clearly, with their pros and cons
  • If an examination is needed, we schedule it for you

Patients most often ask for a second opinion on these topics

If one of the situations below applies to you, we recommend getting one more assessment before you start treatment.

Implants and full prosthetic plans

To compare options when several implants, a bridge or a full-mouth plan has been suggested.

When an extraction is recommended

To learn whether the tooth could be saved with root canal treatment or another approach.

Orthodontic treatment plans

To get clear information on braces or clear aligners, plans with or without extractions and the expected duration.

Jaw surgery and impacted teeth

To discuss the need for and risks of surgery for impacted wisdom teeth, cysts or jaw problems.

Gum disease

To assess the scope of treatment suggested for receding gums, bone loss or loose teeth.

Ongoing pain or an unclear diagnosis

For pain that continues despite treatment, jaw joint complaints or a diagnosis that is still unclear.

How does a second opinion work?

  • The written treatment plan you were given
  • Reports from previous treatments, if any

Frequently asked questions about second opinions

What is a medical second opinion?

It is a review of your diagnosis and recommended treatment by another specialist. The dentist assesses your current plan and possible alternatives and explains their opinion to you.

Does asking for a second opinion mean I do not trust my dentist?

No. Getting a second opinion before extensive or irreversible treatment is common and recommended. It simply helps you make your decision with more confidence.

Do I need to come in for an examination?

Recent X-rays and reports are often enough for a first assessment. If an examination is needed for a clear opinion, our dentist will say so and we will plan your appointment together.

How do I send my documents?

After you submit the form, our patient advisor will call you and explain how you can share your documents. You can also bring your images with you to the examination.

How long does the review take?

It depends on the scope of the case and on whether the documents are complete. Our patient advisor will give you an estimated time when they call.
