What are braces?

Small brackets bonded to the teeth and a thin wire running through them apply gentle, continuous force. The teeth move slowly through the bone in response. Crowding, gaps, bite problems and jaw discrepancies are all treated this way. Because braces are fixed, the result depends less on patient compliance.

Types of brackets

  • Metal brackets: the most durable and economical option. Children enjoy choosing coloured elastics.
  • Ceramic brackets: tooth-coloured and less visible, popular with adults.
  • Lingual brackets: bonded to the back of the teeth and completely hidden from view.

When should treatment start?

The ideal age for a first orthodontic check is 7; if jaw growth needs guiding, a short early treatment is done. Ages 11 to 13, when all permanent teeth are through, is usually the right time for fixed braces. There is no upper age limit for adults; healthy gums and bone are all that is needed.

The process

A plan is made from X-rays, photographs and a digital scan. Brackets are bonded in a single visit. Wires are changed at check-ups every four to six weeks. Treatment takes one to two years on average; at the end the brackets are removed, the teeth are polished and a retainer is fitted.

During treatment

Expect tenderness for a few days in the first week and after each wire change. Avoiding hard, sticky and crunchy foods prevents brackets coming off. Cleaning with an orthodontic brush, interdental brushes and fluoride toothpaste matters more than ever; otherwise white marks can form around the brackets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old for braces?

No. Treatment is possible at any age with healthy gums and bone; adults make up a large share of orthodontic patients.

What if a bracket comes off?

Keep the piece and call the clinic; it is re-bonded at a short appointment.

Will I need a wire after treatment?

A thin wire is bonded behind the teeth or a night retainer is given. This is essential to keep the result.
