Types of prosthesis
Anything made to replace missing teeth is a prosthesis. Which type suits you depends on the number of missing teeth, the condition of the remaining teeth and bone, and your expectations.
Bridge (fixed)
The teeth on either side of the gap are reduced and joined crowns are fitted over them. It is fixed and not removed; it can be metal-based or zirconia. Because the neighbouring teeth must be reduced, it is chosen when an implant is not possible.
Partial removable denture
When some teeth remain, a denture that clips onto them with clasps or precision attachments can be taken in and out.
Full denture
When no teeth remain, a denture rests on the gums and the palate. Retention can be weak in the lower jaw; two implants supporting a snap-on denture make a big difference here.
Implant-supported prosthesis
For a full arch, fixed porcelain teeth on four to six implants, or a removable but stable denture on two to four implants.
The process
A plan is made after an examination and X-rays. Impressions are taken and a trial with the teeth set in wax follows; shade, tooth length and lip support are decided together at this stage. After delivery, one or two adjustment visits are usually needed.
Adjusting and care
Getting used to a removable denture takes two to four weeks; practising speech and eating small bites helps in the first days. Brush the denture daily and leave it in water overnight. Because the gums and bone change over time, dentures are relined or remade every few years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bridge or implant?
If the neighbouring teeth are sound and the bone is adequate, an implant preserves the teeth. If the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, a bridge can make sense.
Can I eat with a removable denture?
Yes, after the adjustment period most foods are comfortable. Sticky and very hard foods can be difficult.
My denture is loose. What can be done?
Relining improves the fit. For lower full dentures, two implants are the most lasting solution.
