What is bonding?

Bonding is the direct application of tooth-coloured composite to the surface of a tooth, sculpted by hand by the dentist. There is no laboratory stage; the work is finished the same day. The tooth is usually left untouched, which makes bonding a reversible treatment.

When is it used?

  • Small chips and lost corners on front teeth
  • Gaps between teeth (diastema)
  • Undersized or misshapen teeth
  • Root surfaces exposed by gum recession
  • Covering stains that whitening cannot remove

How is it done?

The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly etched. A bonding agent is applied, then composite in a matching shade is built up in layers and cured with light. The final shape is sculpted and polished. The procedure is completely painless.

How does it differ from porcelain veneers?

Bonding is quicker and more economical and leaves the tooth untouched. Porcelain stays glossier, does not stain and lasts longer. Bonding is preferred for small corrections; porcelain for many teeth or marked colour changes.

Care

Composite can dull over time and pick up stains at the edges; a yearly polish refreshes it. Nail biting, cracking nuts and biting hard objects with the front teeth can chip it. Any damaged area is easily repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bonding finished in one visit?

Yes. Even several teeth are completed the same day.

Does bonding damage the tooth?

No. Usually no drilling is done, and it can be removed later to switch to another treatment if desired.

How long does bonding last?

Five to eight years on average, longer with regular polishing and careful use.
